When is the Flipkart Axis card's annual fee waived?

Flipkart Axis waives its ₹500 annual fee above ₹3,50,000 of yearly spend. What counts toward it, what does not, and why the posting date decides it.

The Flipkart Axis card waives its ₹500 annual fee when your spend over the card year is greater than ₹3,50,000. That works out to about ₹29,167 a month on average. Rent and wallet loads do not count toward it, and Axis measures the year by the date each transaction posts, not the date you paid.

As of today, Axis also lists the joining fee as nil, marked as a limited-period offer. So the ₹500 is a second-year question: the fee applies from the second year onwards, and whether it lands depends on what the first year’s spend added up to.

How the waiver is measured

Axis’s fees table sets the threshold at annual spend above ₹3,50,000. The wording is “greater than”, so a year that ends exactly on ₹3,50,000 does not qualify. The year runs to your card anniversary, not to 31 March or 31 December, because the fee is charged or skipped on the anniversary.

Two merchant codes are taken out of the count: rent (MCC 6513) and wallet loads (MCC 6540). A rent payment made through a rent app, or money added to a wallet, still goes on the card and still has to be repaid. None of it moves you toward the waiver.

Spend is counted by posting date. A purchase made on the last day of your card year can post a day or two later, and then it belongs to the next year. Axis’s own page advises meeting the criteria 3 working days before the anniversary date for that reason.

A worked example

Say your card carries ₹30,000 a month, and ₹5,000 of that is wallet loads. Over a year that is ₹3,60,000 on the card, which looks comfortably over the line. Take out the ₹60,000 of wallet loads and the counted spend is ₹3,00,000. The year falls ₹50,000 short, and the ₹500 fee is charged.

Rent goes the same way, with one more cost on top. The card record shows Axis charges 1% on every rent transaction. So rent paid on this card costs a fee, earns no cashback and does nothing for the waiver.

What the card page’s own example shows

Axis publishes a value chart on the card page with a sample year of spend. It totals ₹3,63,000 and shows the ₹500 annual fee as waived. One row in that year is ₹18,000 of fuel, which earns no cashback on this card. Without the fuel row, the chart’s year would come to ₹3,45,000, under the threshold.

The fees table names only rent and wallet loads as not counting toward the waiver. Categories that earn no cashback, such as fuel, utilities, insurance and education, are not on that list. The chart’s total only reaches the line if fuel counts, so on this card a spend can earn nothing and still count toward the waiver.

What the fee is worth against the cashback

Priced in the card’s own rates, the ₹500 is small. At 5% on Flipkart, ₹10,000 of Flipkart spend earns back the fee. At the 1% the card pays on most other eligible spend, it takes ₹50,000.

A year that misses the waiver by a little can still come out ahead. The fee costs more than it returns when the card is used lightly, say a few Flipkart orders a year and nothing else.

The catch in the first-year offer

The nil joining fee changes the welcome benefit. The card record lists activation benefits worth ₹350: a ₹250 Flipkart voucher on the first transaction within 30 days, plus 50% off up to ₹100 on a first Swiggy order. The voucher is for paid cards only, and Axis’s page says first-year-free cards are not eligible for it. The Swiggy offer applies to both.

A card opened under the nil joining fee skips a charge in year one and does not get the ₹250 voucher. The first fee decision then comes at the first anniversary, based on that first year’s counted spend.

What to check on your own statement

First, find your card anniversary. It is the month the card was issued, and the statement that carries the annual fee, or its waiver, falls there each year. That date, not the calendar, is when the year closes.

Second, add up the year’s spend and take out anything that posted as rent or as a wallet load. Wallet top-ups are the easy ones to miss, because they often show under a payment app’s name rather than as a wallet.

Third, look at the posting dates in the final week. A large purchase made close to the anniversary may post into the next year.

Fourth, if the fee has already been charged, compare the counted total against ₹3,50,000 before calling the bank. The fees table is the rule the bank will quote back.

Krediit reminds you 45 and 15 days before the anniversary when the spend it has recorded on the card is still short of the ₹3,50,000 line, and says by how much.

Utilities, education, insurance and the rest of Axis's excluded-MCC list earn nothing either. Axis charges 1% on every rent transaction, on fuel above ₹50,000 a cycle, on utilities above ₹25,000 a cycle, on wallet loads and online skill-gaming above ₹10,000 a cycle, and on education paid through a third-party app. Gift card purchases earn no rewards and do not count toward a spend-based fee waiver or milestone.
