The HDFC Diners Club Black Metal costs ₹10,000 a year plus tax, and HDFC waives the renewal fee when you spend ₹8 lakh or more in the year before the renewal date. The joining fee has no waiver. Every cardholder pays the first ₹10,000, and the spend test only applies from the second year on.

Two fees, one waiver

HDFC’s fee page lists a joining fee of ₹10,000 and a renewal fee of ₹10,000, each plus applicable taxes. The waiver line covers the renewal fee alone: spend ₹8 lakh or more in a year before the renewal date. No spend figure removes the joining fee, so the first year’s cost is settled the day the card is issued.

The year in that line is the card’s own year, counted back from the renewal date. A card issued in March renews in March, and the ₹8 lakh has to land in the twelve months before that date. Spread evenly, that comes to about ₹66,667 a month.

The quarterly bonus runs on a different clock

The card page carries a second spend target: ₹4 lakh in a calendar quarter earns 10,000 bonus Reward Points. That target resets on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October, whenever the card’s anniversary falls.

₹8 lakh a year works out to ₹2 lakh a quarter on average, half of what the bonus asks for. If you spend exactly enough to clear the waiver and spread it evenly, you never reach a quarterly bonus. Clearing all four quarters takes ₹16 lakh a year and pays 40,000 bonus points.

Spending is rarely even, though. A quarter with one large expense can reach ₹4 lakh while the year’s total stays near ₹8 lakh, because the bonus looks at which calendar quarter the money falls in and the waiver looks only at the total across the card year.

What the waiver spend earns on its own

The base rate is 5 Reward Points per ₹150. At that rate, ₹8 lakh of ordinary spend earns about 26,666 points before any bonus.

What those points are worth depends on how you redeem them. HDFC’s own table puts a point at ₹1 against flight and hotel bookings on SmartBuy, up to ₹0.50 against products and vouchers, and up to ₹0.30 as cashback. So the same 26,666 points come to about ₹26,666 in SmartBuy travel, well above the ₹10,000 fee, or about ₹8,000 as cashback, which is below it.

At the ₹1 rate, points can pay for up to 70% of a flight or hotel booking, and you pay the rest on the card. The Most Important Terms and Conditions also cap flight and hotel redemptions on this card at 75,000 points a calendar month. A balance of 26,666 points sits well inside that cap; it starts to bind if you let several years of points build up and redeem them in one go.

Points can also move to airline and hotel programmes. Singapore KrisFlyer, Flying Blue, Finnair Plus, Turkish Miles&Smiles and several others take them at 1:1. Accor ALL, British Airways Avios, Air Canada Aeroplan and United MileagePlus take them at 2:1. Once the points sit in a partner programme, what they are worth depends on that programme’s award prices.

The caveat in the fine print

The card’s record lists fuel, rent and wallet loads as spends that earn no Reward Points, and HDFC’s terms say rent earns no points on any of its cards. Neither the fee page nor the terms say whether those spends count towards the ₹8 lakh. If rent is meant to carry the card over the line, get that answer from the bank before the payment goes through, since the renewal statement is too late to find out.

The terms also cap points in categories the card’s record does not list. Grocery spends stop earning at 2,000 points a month, utilities and telecom at 2,000 points each, and insurance at 5,000. A month of heavy insurance or utility payments earns less than the base rate suggests, whatever it does for the waiver total.

Foreign currency spends carry a 2% markup, a cost on top of whatever points the spend earns.

What the fee pays for

The fee pays for unlimited lounge access in India and abroad, for primary and add-on cardholders, and 6 complimentary golf games a quarter, up to 24 rounds a year. A cardholder whose renewal is waived keeps the same lounge and golf benefits as one who pays.

What to check on your own statement

Two of these checks decide whether the renewal fee posts, and the third decides the bonus.

The first is the renewal month. The card year ends in the month the card was issued, and the twelve-month window closes then, not on 31 March.

The second is the running total. HDFC shows milestone spend on SmartBuy’s offers page, under Diners Club Benefits and then Diners Club Black Metal Milestones. Compare that number with the total of your own statements since the last renewal. If the tracker is lower by roughly the rent or wallet loads you put on the card, you have your answer on what counts.

The third is the calendar quarter of each large payment. The 10,000-point bonus is counted by quarter, so the date a payment posts can move it from one quarter to the next.

Krediit counts the spend you log on this card against the ₹8 lakh, from the day you add the card, and sends the shortfall 45 and 15 days before that anniversary.
