It does once about ₹30,000 a year goes through its 10X categories. The SimplySAVE earns 10 Reward Points per ₹150 on dining, movies, groceries and departmental stores, and at ₹0.25 a point that much spend returns ₹500 against a ₹499 annual fee. Spend of ₹1,00,000 in a year also gets the renewal fee reversed. Everywhere else the card earns 1 point per ₹150, and at that rate the points alone never catch the fee before the waiver does.

The question usually comes from someone who holds this card next to one or two cards that charge no fee, and wants to know what the ₹499 pays for.

What the card pays, and where

The record carries two earn rates. Dining and movies earn 10 points per ₹150, which SBI markets as 10X. Groceries and departmental stores earn the same. Every other spend that earns at all gets the base rate of 1 point per ₹150.

Krediit’s catalog values an SBI Card Reward Point at ₹0.25 on statement credit or the rewards catalogue. SBI’s own page uses the same value when it describes the 2,000-point welcome bonus as worth ₹500. At ₹0.25 a point, 10X pays ₹2.50 on every ₹150, a return of about 1.67%. The base rate pays ₹0.25 on every ₹150, about 0.17%.

The return depends on where the card is used: about 1.67% in those four categories, and a tenth of that everywhere else.

The record lists no monthly cap on the 10X points, and SBI’s product page prints none as of 30 September 2026.

Two ways the fee comes back

The first is the waiver. The renewal fee is reversed when the previous year’s spend on the card reaches ₹1,00,000. SBI’s Key Fact Statement words it as waived on annual spends of ₹1 lakh or more in the preceding year. Both sources state the threshold as annual spend and name no category, so a base-rate purchase counts toward it the same as a restaurant bill. It covers the renewal fee only. The first year’s ₹499 is charged either way.

The second is the points. It takes 2,000 points to make ₹500. At 10 points per ₹150, that is ₹30,000 of spend in the 10X categories, or ₹2,500 a month. At 1 point per ₹150, the same 2,000 points need ₹3,00,000 of spend, three times the waiver threshold. Anyone spending that much at the base rate has the fee reversed long before the points cover it.

In the first year the welcome bonus offsets the fee. Spending ₹2,000 in the first 60 days earns 2,000 bonus points, worth ₹500 at the catalog value, which is one rupee more than the fee.

The arithmetic on three kinds of year

Take ₹5,000 a month on groceries and restaurants. Over a year that is ₹60,000 at 10X, which earns 4,000 points, or ₹1,000. Add ₹3,500 a month of other spend: ₹42,000 a year, which earns 280 points at the base rate. The year’s total is ₹1,02,000 of spend and 4,280 points, worth ₹1,070. The spend crosses ₹1,00,000, so the renewal fee is reversed as well, and the ₹1,070 is what the card returned.

Now take ₹1,00,000 a year with none of it in the 10X categories. The fee is still reversed, so the card costs nothing at renewal, and the points come to about ₹167.

The third case is spend under ₹1,00,000, where the fee stays. The 10X categories decide that year. ₹30,000 in them matches the fee in points, and with less than that the card costs more than it returns.

What the fine print carries

Three categories earn no points in the record: fuel, rent and wallet loads. Fuel gets a 1% surcharge waiver instead, on transactions between ₹500 and ₹3,000, up to ₹100 a statement cycle. The waiver refunds the pump’s surcharge and earns no points.

The fee is quoted before taxes. SBI’s page lists it as ₹499 plus taxes, so the amount on the statement is higher than ₹499, and the arithmetic above compares points with the pre-tax figure.

The 10X rate depends on the merchant’s category code. A supermarket that bills under a different code earns 1 point per ₹150, and the statement is the only place that shows which rate a spend got.

Redemption comes in steps. Since 1 April 2026, SBI’s customer notices say Reward Points can go to statement credit only in multiples of 4,000 points. A holder who earns 2,000 points a year, enough to match the fee on paper, waits two years for a first statement credit. In the worked year above, ₹5,000 a month of 10X spend reaches 4,000 points in twelve months. The notice speaks only of statement credit and says nothing about the rewards catalogue.

Foreign-currency spend carries a 3.5% markup. That is more than double what the 10X rate returns, and the 10X categories are the card’s highest rate.

What to check on your own statement

Four lines on a SimplySAVE statement show where the card stands.

First, the points earned in the cycle against the spend. A restaurant or grocery bill earns 10 points for each ₹150. If it shows 1, the merchant sits outside the four categories.

Second, the running spend for the card year. The waiver counts to ₹1,00,000. When the previous year reached it, the renewal fee line is followed by a reversal.

Third, the points balance against 4,000. Below that number the statement-credit route stays closed.

Fourth, the fuel transactions. They show a surcharge and a waiver against it, and no points.

The facts table under this guide is the card’s catalog record, dated. Krediit keeps that record against your own spend, counts the year’s total toward the ₹1,00,000 waiver, and puts a rupee figure on what the 10X categories have earned before the renewal fee posts.
