When is the Swiggy ORNGE HDFC annual fee waived?
The Swiggy ORNGE HDFC card charges ₹500 a year, waived on ₹1,50,000 of spend before the renewal date. What counts, what does not, and what the spend earns.
The Swiggy ORNGE HDFC card charges ₹500 a year, plus applicable charges, and HDFC Bank waives the renewal fee when the card sees ₹1,50,000 of spend in the year before the renewal date. Spend in the current card year decides whether next year’s fee posts, and the joining fee for the first year is not covered by it.
How the renewal waiver works
HDFC’s product page lists one figure for both fees: ₹500 to join and ₹500 to renew. The renewal rule is one sentence. Spend ₹1,50,000 or more in a year, before the renewal date, and the renewal fee is waived. The page’s questions section repeats it in the same words.
The year here is the card’s own year. It starts on the date the card was issued and ends on the renewal date, so a card issued in October counts from October to the next October. A statement view set to the calendar year or the financial year adds up a total the waiver does not use.
Spread evenly, ₹1,50,000 comes to ₹12,500 a month. The waiver reads one annual total, though, so a single large month counts the same as twelve small ones.
The joining fee has no waiver on the product page. The ₹500 for the first year posts as listed, unless the card came with an offer that says otherwise. A card issued under a separate offer follows the terms in its own welcome letter, and those are worth reading before assuming either way.
What does not count toward the ₹1,50,000
The page names three exclusions for the renewal waiver: Cash on Call, balance transfers and cash withdrawals. Money drawn from the card’s limit as a loan or as cash does not add to the total.
The card’s earning rules carry a longer list. Fuel, rent, wallet loads, jewellery, government payments, gift cards, gaming and education earn no cashback on this card. Neither do EMI of any kind, SmartBuy, Smartpay or foreign-currency purchases. None of those appear in the page’s list of waiver exclusions. Whether a spend earns cashback and whether it counts toward the renewal waiver are separate questions, and for those items the page answers neither one directly. Treat any spend from the no-cashback list as uncertain for the waiver until a statement or the bank confirms it.
Refunds are the other open point. The card reverses cashback when a purchase is refunded. The page does not say whether a refund also comes off the waiver total, so the careful reading is that only spend that stays on the card counts.
What the spend earns along the way
Cashback on this card posts as a statement credit at ₹1 a unit, so the rates read directly as percentages. Food delivery, Instamart and Dineout on the Swiggy app earn 5%. A set of online merchant codes also earns 5%: apparel, pharmacies, pet stores, personal care, cabs, electronics and travel. Amazon, Flipkart, Nykaa, Cleartrip, Ajio, Netflix, Hotstar, BookMyShow and Meesho earn it on any online transaction outside the excluded codes. Everything else that is not excluded earns 1%.
Each tier has a ceiling per billing cycle. The two 5% tiers share one ceiling of ₹1,500, which takes ₹30,000 of 5% spend to fill. The 1% tier has its own ceiling of ₹1,000, reached at ₹1,00,000 of spend in a cycle. A 5% purchase has to be at least ₹249 and a 1% purchase at least ₹100, or it earns nothing.
Against the fee, ₹50,000 a year at 1% earns back ₹500, and so does ₹10,000 at 5%. The cashback can cover the fee well before the waiver is reached, so the waiver mostly affects a second or third card that sees modest spend, where it decides whether you pay ₹500 or nothing.
The first-year welcome benefit is 12 months of Swiggy One membership. The card carries no airport lounge access. Foreign-currency spends carry a 3.5% markup and earn no cashback.
A worked example
Take a cardholder who puts ₹8,000 a month on the card, ₹3,000 of it on the Swiggy app and the rest on spends that earn 1%. Over a card year that is ₹96,000. The account ends ₹54,000 short of the waiver, and the ₹500 renewal fee posts.
The cashback over the same year is a separate number. The Swiggy share earns ₹150 a cycle at 5%, the remaining ₹5,000 earns ₹50 at 1%, and the cycle total is ₹200. Over twelve cycles that is ₹2,400, before the ₹500 fee. Neither ceiling comes close to binding at this spend.
The same cardholder could reach the waiver by moving other regular spend onto the card before the renewal date. Rent, fuel or wallet loads would earn nothing on the way, and the page does not confirm they would count.
What to check on your own statement
Find the card’s issue date first. The card year starts there, and the renewal fee posts after it. Then add up the spend since that date, leaving out cash withdrawals, balance transfers, Cash on Call and refunds, and compare it with ₹1,50,000. If the total is close, look at which transactions fall in the no-cashback list above. Those are the ones the page leaves unsettled for the waiver. Last, read the cashback line on each statement. A cycle that shows a 5% credit near ₹1,500 reached the shared ceiling, and further 5% spend in that cycle earned nothing extra.
These are the card’s catalog record and HDFC Bank’s published terms as of the date shown. Krediit’s fee-waiver reminder counts the spend you log on the card against ₹1,50,000 and shows the shortfall before the renewal date.
