Some points cards let you move points into an airline or hotel programme and book an award seat or room with them. Done well it is the best use of points. Done badly it parks them in an account you may never use.
1It is one-way
Miles never come back as card points. HSBC's terms say a transfer cannot be cancelled or reversed once it is placed.
2Find the seat first
Check award space on the airline's own site before you move a single point. Points parked in an airline account earn nothing.
3Register before you transfer
Join the airline or hotel programme and link its membership number to the card. Miles go to that number.
4There are monthly limits
Regalia Gold moves up to 50,000 points a month. On Infinia, transfers share the 1.5 lakh monthly limit with flights and hotels.
5Taxes are paid in cash
An award seat costs miles plus taxes and carrier charges, paid by card. On some airlines those charges run past ₹15,000.
The ratio is how many card points become one mile. At 1:1, 19,000 points become 19,000 miles. At 2:1, the same 19,000 miles cost 38,000 points.

Each journey starts from a seat's published miles price and works back to the card points and the spend it takes, then asks what each point was worth once the cash taxes are paid.
Journey 1 · Infinia → KrisFlyer
Delhi → Singapore, economy saver
- Award price
- 19,000 miles + ₹4,200 cash
- Card points needed
- 19,000 at 1:1
- Spend that earns them
- ₹5,70,000
- Typical cash fare
- ₹24,000
- Each point fetched
- ₹1.04 vs ₹1.00 (Flights and hotels on SmartBuy)
About the same as booking on SmartBuy at ₹1 a point. On Infinia, an economy transfer is a choice of airline, not a gain.
Award price: Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer · checked 27 October 2026. Cash fare is a typical one-way fare, not a quote.
Journey 2 · HSBC TravelOne → Avios
Delhi → London, economy off-peak
- Award price
- 29,000 Avios + ₹18,000 cash
- Card points needed
- 29,000 at 1:1
- Spend that earns them
- ₹14,50,000 · ₹7,25,000 if it is all flights and travel
- Typical cash fare
- ₹42,000
- Each point fetched
- ₹0.83 vs ₹0.25 (Gift cards and merchandise)
More than three times the gift-card value, but ₹18,000 of the ticket is still paid in cash. Check the carrier charges before you transfer.
Award price: British Airways reward flight prices · checked 27 October 2026. Cash fare is a typical one-way fare, not a quote.
Journey 3 · Regalia Gold → KrisFlyer
Delhi → Singapore, economy saver
- Award price
- 19,000 miles + ₹4,200 cash
- Card points needed
- 38,000 at 2:1
- Spend that earns them
- ₹15,20,000
- Typical cash fare
- ₹24,000
- Each point fetched
- ₹0.52 vs ₹0.50 (Flights and hotels on SmartBuy)
At 2:1 the same seat costs twice the points, and each point ends up worth what SmartBuy already pays.
Award price: Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer · checked 27 October 2026. Cash fare is a typical one-way fare, not a quote.
The same Delhi to Singapore seat costs 19,000 Infinia points or 38,000 Regalia Gold points. The ratio decides it.
When a transfer is worth it
Compare what each point fetches after the cash taxes with the card's best plain redemption. In these three, a transfer clearly wins only on TravelOne, whose other options are weak. On HDFC cards, SmartBuy pays about the same for an economy seat. The gap opens on business class: KrisFlyer prices Mumbai to Singapore in business at 45,000 miles against a typical fare near ₹68,000.
Hotel points can beat both, if you stay with that chain: Regalia Gold at about ₹1.10 a point moved to Accor ALL, Infinia at about ₹1.10 a point moved to Accor ALL and HSBC TravelOne at about ₹2.19 a point moved to Accor ALL (our estimates).
